It was Saturday. Our First Anniversary. Helen and Susie can by 2 pm in the afternoon and all the 3 ladies started with their conversation, catching up with each other. I stayed for some time and then left, as I was not feeling comfortable in the house. I was not sure whether Lilly was going to tell her mom about Hunter and his deeds. Though she told that she won’t mention it herself. I gathered some dinner items, as they insisted on cooking the meals at home. We didn’t invite any of our friends as we wanted to keep it quiet. Or maybe we didn’t think that “our marriage” was anything to celebrate. The family had already planned a long time ago so we didn’t say no to them.
It was evening already. The house was full of chatters and laughs sharing stories of Lilly’s childhood. All of us dressed up and the dinner table was set. Then there was a knock at the door. Yeah! I didn’t tell Lilly that Hunter had invited himself to the party. Because deep down, I thought that he won’t show up, so I didn’t want to upset her. But I guess he showed up. I opened the door and saw Hunter and Chris in casual clothes and with a bouquet of flowers in their hands. Again they just walked by me and entered and greeted everyone with a smile.
“Hey, Lilly, Happy anniversary” Hunter greeted Lilly with a hug and so did Chris. Lilly looked at me with wide eyes. Questioning what is going on? I just shrugged as if it was a surprise for me too.
“Thanks, Hunter, Chris. I didn’t know Jimmy had invited you guys?” Lilly said.
“What? not only he tell me about your anniversary he also told me his Stepmom and Mother-in-law are in town…. Ladies” Hunter gave the flowers to each lady. They just blushed and looked at these young hunks.
“Hi I’m Hunter and this is Chris, we are Jimmy’s high school friends and now his neighbors. So yeah! we have a good relationship with your family.” He said looking back at me.
“Well I’m Susie, Lilly’s mom and this is Helen, Jimmy’s Stepmom. And also we are sisters” Susie introduced and chuckled at the last bit as she too understood that was a little awkward.
“Oh.. ok I didn’t know that. So won’t that make Jimmy and Lilly, brother and sister?” Chris said with a grin on his face.
“Well, technically yes, but she is not Jimmy’s real mom so….” Susie laughed.
“Yeah….I see that your husband didn’t make it.” Hunter looked around.
“Well, they both had their own business things to attend to so we girls are here to celebrate,” Helen said raising her glass.
“Why don’t we all sit down and have dinner, Let me make the table for you kids.” Susie, is such an innocent soul. Didn’t know what her daughter and these “Guests” have been up to.
We all gathered and sat down around the dinner table. Lilly was sitting next to me, and next to her was her mom, and next to her was Helen, in front of me. Hunter and Chris were to my right next to each other.
We had a general conversation about what we do and some stories here and there. Hunter was taking a little more interest in Susie and Helen’s locations and day-to-day activities. I found that a little odd but I just let it go. Soon the music was set and everyone was divided into smaller groups. Susie and Chris were having a separate conversation on the balcony while Hunter and my stepmom were on the couch. Lilly and I were near the kitchen sink arranging everything.
